Rowlands Castle History & Heritage have our penultimate talk of the season this Tuesday (18^th ). The talk will be given by local osteoarchaeologist Lesley Johnson and is entitled “Lepers on the Hill”. The talk is primarily based on evidence from the early medieval Leper Hospital at Winchester, using comparisons with other sites such as Chichester. This multi-disciplinary presentation uses documentary sources, drawings, and biological studies as well as archaeology to create biographies of medieval leprosy sufferers (human and squirrels!).
As usual, the meeting will start at 7:30pm in the Parish Hall. Entry, members free, non-members £5
We are also arranging a guided tour of old Portsmouth for members on Thurs 22nd May, led by Andrew Negus of recent “Harlots, Dung and Glory” fame. There will be an expression of interest sheet at the meeting for you to sign if you wish to take part. Also there is a slight change to our programme. Back by very popular request on 15th April is Andrew Negus, with PART 2 of his series of talks “Harlots Dung and Glory”. Part 2 covers the equally interesting period 1750 – 1850 and includes stories of the Press Gang, Nelson, a gentle cobbler and an actress of great repute.
