We are very fortunate to be able to welcome as our Speaker, Her Honour Judge Sarah Munro KC, Senior Circuit Judge, Central Criminal Court whose talk will be entitled ‘Women and the Law and the Life of an Old Bailey Judge’. Sarah practised in the South West for over 25 years, was a Crown Court Recorder from 1998 and became a QC in 2002 after which she prosecuted and defended homicides and other high profile and serious cases. In 2013 she joined the Sentencing Council and was then awarded a ‘Murder Ticket’ which would enable her to advance her judicial career by way of promotion to Senior Circuit Judge at the Central Criminal Court.
By 2015 although having no experience of the London Criminal Courts and having never practised in London Sarah’s application for promotion was successful and she was one of six judges appointed at the Central Criminal Court. In Judge Sarah’s case ‘the day job’ involves the trial of homicide, often young teenagers accused of knife murders of other teenagers, with complex legal issues and vast amounts of material to be absorbed and summarised for the jury. In July 2022 Sarah made legal history as the first judge to be broadcast passing sentence, she is a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Ironmongers’ Company.
Hoping to see all Members (and others who are not members but may wish to join us on the day) on Monday 19th February – at the revised time of 2.45.
Rosemary Ridge
