Rowlands Castle Gardening Club are again working with PeCAN (Perterfield Climate Action) to offer fruit trees at a huge discount to local residents. This is a repeat of the successful scheme which ran in 2023 but this year includes free native hedging to encourage the planting of new hedges.
Residents can order trees on line for collection from St. John’s Church car park on Saturday morning 24 February. You will need to order by 10 February from the PeCAN website petersfieldcan.org/projects/nature-recovery/trees/order-your-fruit-trees
*Thanks to a newly established partnership with The Tree Council, and ongoing support from East Hampshire District Council (this project has received funding from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund), there are more trees available this year, plus free hedging plants for anyone who wishes to replace a fence or create a new hedge. Each fruit tree costs just £12 and comes with a stake and instructions on how to plant. These trees usually cost between £25 – £35 but thanks to our partners you can buy them at a heavily subsidised price. *
*Orders are now open! Orders for fruit trees and hedging are now open with the following options: *
*· 1-year-old maiden trees, potted in 4 litre pots (a young fruit tree with a single leading stem and some side shoots, but importantly has had no pruning or training). *
*· 2-year-old bare root bush trees (a young tree that has been pruned back in the first winter to form a bush shape). *
*· FREE Mixed native hedging, 65% Hawthorn, plus a mix of at least 5 other species. *
*There is a limited stock of each variety – types available this year include apple, pear, plum, greengages and cherries! *
*The Native Hedging Mix contains a mixture of 65% Hawthorn and at least 5 other native species to create a traditional hedge. The other 5 variable species are usually made up of Blackthorn, Field maple, Dogwood, Crab apple, Guelder Rose, Dog Rose, and Hazel. *
*None of the plants are poisonous to livestock, and they provide a diverse habitat that encourages wildlife who feast on the fruits, seeds and berries the hedge provides. It also creates a natural corridor for the movement of wildlife, and RSBP says that these hedges provide support for up to 80% of our woodland birds.* _______________________________________________ Grapevine mailing list: info@rowlandscastle.com
