Wednesday 26^th February,
CONCLAVE
After our last film – the delicious French comedy, The Crime is Mine – we are venturing into more complex territory with the political thriller, Conclave.
Set in the Vatican on the eve of a papal election, this is an engrossing, plot-driven, drama on the machinations set in train by the selection of four very different candidates. Secrets and scandals abound in the suspense filled build-up to the election. Based on Robert Harris’s 2016 novel and starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and (film club favourite) Isabella Rossellini, this film has had glowing reviews and is now shortlisted for a number of Oscars.
‘Harris and playwright Peter Straughan (who co-wrote 2011’s equally involving adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) have found humour and suspense in the fictionalised hunt for a new Pope, an election that propels a timely and tense political thriller … Ralph Fiennes is on sumptuous form as the deeply troubled Cardinal Lawrence at the centre of a murky Vatican plot. The result is a high-camp gripper, like the world’s most serious Carry On film.’ The Guardian
Sinfully enjoyable and an escape from another bizarre election result … reviewers have asked is a movie about electing a Pope allowed to be this entertaining?
