COMPTON FILM CLUB – THE APARTMENT
Tuesday 7th November, 7.30pm for 8pm
Thank you for the fantastic turnout for our October meeting – we think it was a record number and were delighted that so many of you are back to support us for another season.
After the moving and reflective performances in The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, we are showing a Billy Wilder black and white classic for November. Acclaimed by some as his finest film it comes highly recommended as an ‘all-time classic of corporate and sexual manners’. Starring Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon, this surprisingly dark romantic-comedy was partly inspired by Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter – will they find their way to each other through the forces that keep them apart in New York’s seedy corporate world of the 1960s? The chemistry between the two leads, Wilder’s comic dialogue and his understanding of the cynicism of human nature makes this film worth the watch – or the re-watch– they don’t make them like this anymore!!
‘Still an indefinable marvel after 60 years, The Apartment is not merely about an everyman type, but a profound reflection on what life is like for the everyman in America – and for the everywoman, too, as embodied by Shirley MacLaine <www.theguardian.com/film/shirley-maclaine>, playing Fran Kubelik, a lowly elevator operator. Director Billy Wilder, operating at the peak of his powers …’ The Guardian
And a date for your diaries – 12th December when we will be showing the highly acclaimed Aftersun.
Look forward to seeing you on the 7th November and the 12th December!
