COMPTON FILM CLUB Screening Past Lives Tuesday 23rd January

COMPTON FILM CLUB – January, February and March films!
Tuesday 23rd January, Past Lives
Monday 12th February, Scrapper
Thursday 14th March, The Great Escaper
WELCOME BACK to everyone who supported us last year – we greatly appreciate your feedback, enthusiasm and suggestions so do let us know if there is a film you are hoping to see in your local community cinema and we will try and show it. Due to the healthy turnout last year, we found ourselves in credit and were able to make a donation to Stonepillow from our funds – fulfilling the club’s original intention of giving back to local charity – thank YOU!
We are delighted to be back with three must-see new films. Firstly, on Tuesday 23rd January we will be showing the highly recommended, Oscar-nominated, Korean film, Past Lives. ‘A spine-tingling gem – a tale of not-so-brief encounters between star-crossed souls, played out over a period of 24 years.’ The Guardian
Then on Monday 12th February we are showing Scrapper. This vibrant father-daughter portrayal ‘walking a delicate tonal tightrope between humour and sincere tenderness’ [Empire Magazine] follows Georgie (Lola Campbell) a resourceful 12-year-old girl who secretly lives alone in her flat in a working class suburb of London following the death of her mother. She makes money stealing bikes with her best friend Ali (Alin Uzun) and keeps the social workers off her back by pretending to live with an uncle. Out of nowhere, her estranged father Jason (Harris Dickinson) arrives and forces her to confront reality. It was nominated for British Independent Film of the Year and Winner of a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. ‘Scrapper is a solar system of a film, with Campbell’s playful and defiant Georgie shining bright at its centre. You’ll not find many characters this year quite as likeable.’ The Independent
On Thursday 14th March we will be showing The Great Escaper staring Michael Caine and the late, great Glenda Jackson. ‘Michael Caine is brilliant as a D-Day veteran who sneaks out of his retirement home – but the late actress is a force of nature to the last.’ The Telegraph ‘Caine and Jackson and their ineffable class give this film some real grit: it’s a wonderful last hurrah for Jackson and there is something moving and even awe-inspiring in seeing these two British icons together.’ The Guardian
