Dear Readers,
After a frustrating wait for mounting equipment to be installed, we are pleased to finally have the Average Speed Cameras operational along Manor Lodge Road. The installation of these solar-powered cameras is part of a wider East Hampshire initiative, particularly aimed at identifying the highest and most persistent speeding vehicles, and allowing these vehicles to be reported to Hampshire Police. The cameras do not capture any images of residential properties.
The cameras will photograph the rear vehicle registration number (VRN) of speeding vehicles only and record date/time and speed, and the average speed between two points. A dedicated Speedwatch Coordinator will monitor the information on behalf of the Parish Council, strictly observing GDPR regulations. The cameras do not store any data, and the Parish Council is not party to any personal details. This can only be accessed by Hampshire Police when combined with data sourced from the DVLA.
As previously explained, Manor Lodge Road was chosen on the basis of road usage data from our Speed Indicator devices, and South of Butser Speedwatch information. We know that speeding is widespread across the Parish and if these cameras prove effective then the Parish Council may look to install more Average Speed Cameras at other locations in the future.
The involvement of the South of Butser Speedwatch team is central to this initiative and we are grateful for their involvement. However, this small team can only do so much, and if the Parish Council is to consider installing further cameras, the team will need more volunteers to help. If you want to find out more about becoming part of this friendly team you can contact Hampshire Police Community Speedwatch team at www.hampshire.police.uk/police-forces/hampshire-constabulary/areas/careers/careers/police-support-volunteers/community-speedwatch/ or drop us a line at the Parish Office and we will put you in touch with our Speedwatch Coordinator.
A copy of the AutoSpeedWatch Camera Policy and Privacy Impact Assessment can be found on the Parish Council’s website.
