Compton Film Club April 9th THELMA

COMPTON FILM CLUB
Wednesday 9th April
THELMA
Thank you to all our film club followers for the great turnout for both The Crime is Mine and Conclave. Next up we have Thelma – a straight-talking, crime-busting granny, played with humour and poignancy by June Squibb (extraordinarily, her first leading role at the age of 94!) This film is for anyone who has been scammed before and wants to get even with the modern world.
Inspired by the director Josh Margolin’s own grandmother, Thelma is a widow being looked after and checked in on by her slacker grandson, Danny (Fred Hechinger). When she is scammed out of £10,000 by a phone fraudster, Thelma sets out after the bad guys on a mobility scooter borrowed from her gentleman admirer (Shaft’s Richard Roundtree). Inspired by Tom Cruise, it’s Mission Impossible, but not as we know it! This portrayal of one of the least likely action heroes is in turn a hilarious, tender and ‘ well-observed story of a grandmother refusing to accept the limitations of age’.
‘The journey, a Tom Cruise-inspired action arc if the obstacles were stairs and the gadgets hearing aids, is a delight to behold … It’s likely to draw laughs if you’ve ever coached someone on how to use a computer, tears if you’ve ever loved an elderly person who held tightly to their dignity. And Squibb is as understatedly funny and commanding as you’d expect. Both actor and character remain, despite all societal and personal forces to the contrary, absolutely vital even as the circumstances and potential of life shrink. What a joy to witness it.’ The Guardian
