Death of Mary Jane Lomer, resident of Rowlands Castle

Dear Reader
We have received the sad news that Mary Jane Lomer died peacefully in the early hours of Monday 10th February 2025 at her daughter’s house in Surrey.
Mary Jane was a long-term resident of Rowlands Castle and was very highly-regarded. Many years ago, she ran the Nursery School, where Beechwood House Nursing Home is now. She then owned and ran the very popular Coffee Pot, a café/restaurant on The Green where an estate agents is now, and lived in the flat above. At the time, she would often employ local teenagers who learned to cook and serve at weekends and in the school holidays – her Sausage Rolls, Millionaire’s Shortbread and Cathy’s Apple Pie were particular favourites!
When she retired, she and her husband, Roger, moved to Hayling Island and were there until his passing in 2011, then in 2012 Mary Jane returned to live on The Green here in Rowlands Castle.
She was a renowned local artist and historian, producing paintings, tea towels (sold by Home Hardware for her nominated charity – the Pulmonary Hypertension Association) and booklets such as “Round and About Rowlands Castle”.
In May 2023, health issues meant she moved in with her daughter in Surrey where she lived very happily amongst family for her final days.
